China EV Battery GB 38031-2025: Importer Checklist

China EV Battery GB 38031-2025: Importer Checklist

The bottom line: For any importer buying Chinese EVs, the real line in the sand is not price but GB 38031-2025, China's new traction-battery safety standard in force since July 2026. It lifts the thermal-spread rule from a 5-minute pre-fire alarm to no fire, no explosion, and adds bottom-impact and post-fast-charge safety tests. That is a hard filter on sourcing: if you do not specify the compliant pack, a destination-country re-test on arrival can stall customs or registration and add unbudgeted rework cost.

The two new tests hit real export risks: a bottom ball-strike simulates underbody and gravel impact, and post-fast-charge safety means 300-plus DC cycles before the thermal-spread test, exactly the abuse a pack sees on rough roads in Russia or the Gulf.

If the destination instead demands an equivalent test after the cars land, re-testing or rework adds roughly 2,000 to 4,000 yuan (¥) per vehicle; on a 500-unit order that is 1 million yuan, around 3% of margin.

Also watch GB 48001-2026 on door handles: fully hidden pop-out handles are banned and every door needs an independent mechanical handle, critical in freezing northern markets.

Do three things now: request the GB 38031-2025 pack test report plus the bottom-impact and fast-charge results from your supplier; add a clause that the pack meets the destination's equivalent standard on arrival; pre-screen with the VIN list 60 days before arrival. Make the test report a pre-order condition, cheaper and safer than re-testing at port.
