Sodium-Ion Batteries: Cold-Weather Edge

The bottom line: The real pain point for Chinese EVs sold into Russia and the Nordics is winter range loss, and sodium-ion is the practical way around it: lab and production data show sodium cells hold about 85% capacity at minus 20 Celsius, far less degradation than LFP in extreme cold, and cost 20% to 30% less than LFP. With volume fitment through 2026, importers should put it on the cold-market shortlist.

For the importer that means the same car in a Moscow winter of minus 25 runs about 15% to 25% more real range on sodium than on LFP, cutting range-complaint risk and after-sales pressure.

Most direct the math: a 60 kWh sodium pack costs about 2,000 to 5,000 yuan less than an equivalent LFP pack on materials; on a 30,000 dollar landed car that is about 1% to 2% saved per unit.Energy density is about 10% to 20% below LFP, but cold markets value reliability over extreme range, so the trade pays.

Sourcing: favour models with an announced sodium version or sodium-LFP mix, and ask the factory for the low-temperature capacity-retention report.Note sodium's lower density means high-long-haul markets should still lead with LFP; do not apply it across the board.

Three actions: ask the factory for the sodium low-temp report and fitment schedule; trial a small batch through the destination winter to verify range before scaling; write the cold edge into quote and promo. Make sodium a cold-market sourcing variable; do not let rivals take the mind-share first.
