Age limitUsed and internal-combustion vehicle imports are banned (Ministry of Transport directive effective January 2024, renewed July 2024). Only electric vehicles may be imported, with no formal age cap for personal use but a limit of one vehicle per person per year. Confirm the current personal-import quota with Ethiopian Customs.
Import duty & taxesElectric vehicles are exempt from customs duty (0%) and subject to 15% VAT (from August 2024) plus a 3% withholding tax; no excise duty applies. Charging uses the CCS2 or Type 2 connector; a UN R136 battery safety certificate is required. ICE vehicles cannot be imported at all.
