BYD Launches Megawatt Flash Charging: 1,000V High-Voltage Platform Adds About 400 km in 5 Minutes

In March 2025, BYD unveiled its Super e-Platform, becoming the world's first mass-produced passenger-car platform with a full-vehicle 1,000V high-voltage architecture. Combined with 1,000A current and a 10C charging rate, single-gun peak power reaches 1,000kW, with the official claim of "about 400 km of range in a 5-minute charge." The first models to carry it were the Han L and Tang L. The significance of full-vehicle 1,000V voltage lies in the fact that the entire electric drive system (battery, e-motor, and charging port) is designed for high voltage from the start, rather than boosting voltage only at the charging stage. This leaves hardware headroom for continued increases in fast-charging power down the road, while also enabling thinner wiring, lower energy consumption, and higher motor efficiency. A useful analogy: EVs used to charge like a small hose filling a big tank; megawatt flash charging is like a high-pressure water cannon pouring straight in — that is the source of the step change in refueling efficiency.

In March 2026, BYD released its second-generation Blade Battery and flash-charging technology, pushing fast-charging capability a step further: 1,500kW single-gun peak, up to 2,100kW with dual-gun parallel charging, roughly 5 minutes to top up from 10% to 70% SOC and about 9 minutes from 10% to 97%. Even in −30°C extreme cold, charging from 20% to 97% takes only about 3 minutes longer than at normal temperatures. In real-world winter tests in Harbin, several models completed a full fast charge in no more than 12 minutes. This means users in high-latitude markets such as Russia, Scandinavia, and Canada no longer have to put up with the classic pain point of "slow charging in winter." Low-temperature fast-charging capability is becoming a differentiating selling point for export models, and it takes EV usability in frigid regions up a level.

The charging network is expanding in parallel: as of June 2026, BYD had built over 6,600 flash-charging stations and plans to reach nearly 20,000 by the end of 2026, including stations co-located with Sinopec fuel sites. Overseas, BYD is simultaneously rolling out ultra-fast charging infrastructure in key markets, pushing charging convenience from "available" toward "available everywhere." For dealers and importers, a brand-owned charging network means one more quantifiable selling point at the point of sale: customers can directly see real-world data such as "charge 5 minutes, drive 400 km," which dramatically reduces post-purchase range anxiety — more persuasive than any marketing slogan.

For buyers, charging speed directly determines how well EVs are accepted in markets where charging infrastructure is still immature. In the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and parts of Africa, public fast charging is scarce; long range combined with ultra-fast charging can significantly reduce buyers' range anxiety — a key precondition for pure EVs to displace gasoline vehicles in these markets. At the same time, it is important to note that ultra-fast-charging models place higher demands on grid capacity and charger specifications. Before purchasing, the destination country's grid conditions and third-party charger compatibility should be assessed to avoid the "fast car, slow charger" experience gap. If the local grid is aging, supporting upgrades or a dual-gun solution may be needed, and such hidden costs should be factored into procurement calculations. In addition, the spread of megawatt flash charging is upgrading the entire charging industry chain: high-power charging guns, liquid-cooled cables, and energy-storage-equipped supercharging stations are all developing in tandem. Over the next two to three years, ultra-fast charging will evolve from a "flagship feature" into a "standard configuration," steadily raising the technology bar for Chinese EVs in overseas markets.
