Geely Riddara Electric Pickup Launches in South Africa: Entry Price R53,400 Lower Than Diesel Hilux

The real signal is the price inversion, not the launch of a new vehicle. Geely Riddara RD6 has three price tiers in South Africa: rear-wheel-drive entry at R611,900, mid-range four-wheel-drive at R681,900, and top-spec Apex at R781,900. The entry model is R53,400 cheaper than the equivalent diesel double-cab Toyota Hilux, marking the first time in Southern Africa that an electric double-cab pickup undercuts its diesel rival on sticker price. This gap is the anchor for your next round of quotes. At current exchange rates, this R53,400 is about US$2,900, enough to cover two years of maintenance for one vehicle plus a home charging station. Buyers can do the math. Whether it's worth following depends on right-hand-drive production scheduling and exchange rates, not the launch ceremony itself.

Riddara is an independent brand within the Geely Holding group. It was previously brought into South Africa in small batches by multi-brand EV importer Enviro Automotive, and is now sold through Geely South Africa's official channels. For those in parallel importing, this matters more than the new vehicle itself: the grey channel has been absorbed by the official one, which means the manufacturer believes this category can scale. The chassis is a unibody, not the ladder frame typical of diesel pickups, and the rear axle does not use leaf springs; length is 5,260 mm, width 1,900 mm, wheelbase 3,120 mm, ground clearance 225 mm. South Africa only recognizes right-hand drive; left-hand-drive vehicles cannot be registered, so right-hand-drive production scheduling is the real barrier. This identity difference also determines whether you get rebates from the manufacturer or can only wholesale from dealers.

There are two battery options, both lithium iron phosphate: 63 kWh for rear-wheel drive and 73 kWh for four-wheel drive. The manufacturer's NEDC range is 369 and 390 km, which translates to only 314 and 332 km under WLTP, a shrinkage of about 15%. DC fast charging is 90 to 110 kW, but AC is only 6.6 kW; a 73 kWh pack takes 11 hours from empty to full, so a home charger cannot fully charge it overnight. Calculating at home charging R3.00/kWh and diesel R22.50/liter: electric is about R0.66 per kilometer, diesel about R1.91 per kilometer, a difference of R1.25 per kilometer. Driving 25,000 km a year saves R31,250, recouping the R53,400 price difference in less than two years. Customers should be reminded that this 15% gap in test cycles often widens further under South African highway conditions.

The impact on importers has three layers. First, the category is validated: 3,000 kg towing and 1,030 kg payload mean it can handle the work of a one-tonne pickup, but the two-wheel-drive version tows only 2,500 kg, which will be a sticking point for construction and farm procurement. Second, competition becomes a battle of powertrain routes: BYD Shark 6 plug-in hybrid holds the performance slot with 321 to 350 kW, and electric and plug-in hybrid compete for the same customers in the same showroom. Third, channel reshuffling: right-hand-drive production scheduling, certification documents, and after-sales warranty entities determine who can get stock, not who quotes lower. Construction and farm procurement cycles are quarterly, so unstable delivery quotes, no matter how low, won't make the shortlist.

It is recommended to request five items from suppliers as a checklist: 1. Right-hand-drive model certification documents and NRCS Letter of Authority for each configuration; 2. Measured WLTP range at full load of 1,000 kg, not NEDC figures; 3. Whether the 8-year or 200,000 km battery warranty can be transferred to a fleet entity; 4. Power specifications of the onboard charger and DC fast charging; 5. A landed cost table itemized by FOB, ocean freight, tariffs, certification fees, and after-sales reserve. Align these five documents before discussing price; otherwise, differences in freight and certification will eat your margin in one go at landing. Finally, choose models by cost per kilometer, not by sticker price.
