Vietnam: CBU imports grow 11x faster than local assembly

Vietnam's 38% September rebound means the shift is structural: built-up imports are pulling away from local assembly. CBU volume grew about eleven times faster in nine months. For volume this year, importing still beats betting on a local plant. Watch the quota and the registration fee table first.

September's market reached 35,094 units, up 38% on the month and 14% on the year. VAMA members took 26,209 of them, a count that excludes Hyundai and VinFast. VinFast alone reports 177,697 deliveries in nine months, about 36% of the market. Hybrids added 16,057 units, up 64%.

Nine-month volume hit 282,029 units, up 12%. CBU imports reached 160,164, up 22%, against 121,865 locally assembled, up just 2%. That elevenfold gap means imports take a bigger slice of new volume than of the fleet. Hybrids sit on the import side too.

Three things matter for importers. Once CBU outruns the lines, quota approval and shipping windows become the binding constraint. Registration fee rules differ between imported and locally built cars, so any revision resets your landed cost. With hybrids up 64%, charging still lags.

Do three things this month. Ask suppliers for the CBU quota status, the registration fee schedule and a full landed-cost sheet. Order quarterly, not monthly, and run a small CBU trial first. Send your model and spec list for a priced landed cost.

Frequently asked questions

Which markets demand the most Chinese vehicles?
Latin America, Central Asia & CIS, the Middle East, Africa and the EU all show steady demand with different preferences (e.g. pickups and SUVs in Central Asia, heat-resistant models in the Middle East). EZ Auto supplies all five regions equally, without betting on a single market.

Where can I check Chinese vehicle export data?
Export volumes, destination registrations and import figures are published by China Customs and destination statistics offices. EZ Auto's News section digests the key trends so buyers can judge quickly.

How do shipping cost swings affect my purchase?
Freight is a meaningful share of landed cost and moves with capacity and fuel. EZ Auto locks the shipping method and timing at contract and quotes major pre-arrival costs to limit mid-way price changes.

How do exchange-rate swings affect export quotes?
RMB and destination-currency fluctuations affect landed cost. EZ Auto stamps a validity period on quotes, and volume orders can lock an exchange-rate window to reduce price-change risk.

Which models hold value better in target markets?
Resale value depends on local parc size, parts availability and brand recognition. EZ Auto advises model choices based on the destination's market rather than simply pushing high-margin units.
