BYD's July Overseas Sales Hit a Record High; January-July Exports Near 970,000 Units, Closing in on the One-Million Mark

BYD's July Overseas Sales Hit a Record High; January-July Exports Near 970,000 Units, Closing in on the One-Million Mark

According to a Beike Caijing report on August 4, BYD sold 419,200 vehicles in July, achieving growth in both month-on-month and year-on-year terms during the industry's off-season; overseas sales hit an all-time high, with 179,800 passenger vehicles and pickups exported, up 124.3% year on year. From January to July this year, BYD's cumulative overseas sales exceeded 969,000 units, just one step away from the one-million mark; under the Cailianshe statistical basis (including commercial vehicles), July exports reached 180,500 units, up 123.6% year on year, with exports accounting for 43.1% of sales — meaning more than four of every ten vehicles sold came from overseas.

With the domestic market cooling, exports have become the core strategic market for automakers to stabilize their fundamentals. According to CPCA estimates, retail sales of narrow passenger vehicles in July 2026 reached about 1.52 million units, down 5.1% month on month; China's auto exports hit 1.037 million units in June alone, breaking the one-million-unit monthly mark for the first time, up 75.1% year on year; cumulative exports in January-June reached 5.096 million units, up 65.3%. Among the six major auto groups tracked in the July statistics, all posted year-on-year growth in overseas sales, with the highest gain reaching 202%. Notably, new-energy vehicle exports in January-June reached 2.355 million units, up 1.2 times year on year, making exports the core driver of China's auto export growth.

Structurally, BYD's Dynasty and Ocean series sold more than 350,000 units combined in July, shoring up the fundamentals; the three premium brands Fangchengbao, Denza and Yangwang sold over 60,000 units combined in July, lifting their share of sales to 14.5%, with the premium push effectively offsetting adjustment pressure in the domestic market. Overseas expansion is advancing in parallel: the Thailand base covers ASEAN, and the Brazil plant has been built and put into operation; the company also plans to build 3,000 ultra-fast charging piles in Europe within the next 12 months, including at least 300 in the UK, laying the groundwork early for its overseas EV charging network. In addition, the Sea Otter micro EV, customized for the Japanese market, went on sale on July 28, developed to the dimensions of Japanese light-vehicle standards, demonstrating its product localization capability.

For importers, BYD's overseas volume ramp-up and premium push mean three changes: first, mainstream volume models are abundantly supplied globally, making supply and pricing in the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Latin America and other markets more stable and widening importers' bargaining room; second, as the three premium brands go global, the value of official dealership and regional agency rights rises; third, as overseas capacity and infrastructure such as ultra-fast charging piles come on stream, delivery lead times are expected to shorten and after-sales support to strengthen. That said, note that the EU's anti-dumping duty on Chinese pure EVs (about 17.4% for BYD) combined with the 10% standard tariff puts pricing under pressure in Europe, leaving non-European markets as the value-for-money window. For importers that have already established supply relationships with BYD, the volume ramp-up period is also a good time to secure better shipping schedules and payment terms.

Importers should do four things now: first, add BYD's mainstream models to comparison lists and use the volume ramp-up period to secure better batch pricing and delivery terms; second, proactively learn about BYD's authorized dealer system in their markets and pursue official authorization or compliant second-tier distribution status; third, watch for agency opportunities for Fangchengbao, Denza and Yangwang, as premium models offer better gross margins; fourth, in light of local charging infrastructure and policies (such as the EU anti-dumping duty and target countries' new-energy incentive policies), prioritize markets that are policy-friendly toward Chinese brands.
