Importing vehicles from mainland China to Moldova is declared at the Customs Service of the Republic of Moldova. Moldova has signed a Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area (DCFTA) agreement with the EU and is gradually aligning with EU legislation, but Chinese-made vehicles do not enjoy EU-origin preference and are subject to Moldova's national tariff — an import duty assessed on the customs value (ad valorem or specific), plus an excise duty calculated by engine capacity and age, and a 20% VAT. Notably, fully electric vehicles are exempt from excise duty, making them cheaper to import. For technical entry, vehicles must present type-approval or conformity documentation aligned with EU regulations (UN/ECE); Moldova is harmonising its technical standards with the EU as part of its accession process. Moldova drives on the right (European standard), and right-hand-drive vehicles cannot be imported. Used imports are prohibited for vehicles over 10 years old (except diplomatic and collector vehicles). As a landlocked country, sea freight usually arrives at the Romanian port of Constanța and is then moved overland to Chișinău.
